A piano is the one thing in the house you can’t just muscle onto a hand truck, and New Chapter Moving Company moves them the right way. Our own crews have carried uprights down Black Rock staircases and rolled grands across Downtown lobbies since 2015. Specialty piano work starts at $379, and it’s done by movers who’ve actually done it, not a general crew guessing on the day.
Different gear for uprights and grands
An upright rides on a heavy-duty four-wheel piano dolly, strapped upright and padded at the corners and top lid. The crew keeps it level on stairs with a stair-climbing dolly and never tips it onto its back, which protects the action and the casters. Two to three movers handle most uprights depending on the weight and the staircase.
A grand is a bigger operation. We remove the legs, the lyre, and the pedals, then lower the body onto a padded piano board (a skid), strap it down, and stand it on its flat side for the carry. Everything that came off gets wrapped and boxed separately so the finish and the hardware stay perfect. Reassembly and leveling happen at the new room.
The thing most people don’t realize is how much the path matters more than the weight. Before the date, we ask about doorways, the turn at the bottom of the stairs, and whether there’s a step down to the garage, because a few inches decides whether a grand stands on its long side or its short side coming through. For a Downtown high-rise we book the freight elevator; for a triple-decker we plan the railings. A $150 deposit holds the date, and the move carries our standard released-value coverage with full-value protection available for high-value instruments.
